Alpha and beta-hydroxy acids come from a variety from natural sources. Citrus fruits yield citrus acid, malic acid from apples, glycolic acid is from sugar, tannic acids from wine, lactic acids from milk products etc.. These acids have been around for a long long time. Cleopatra soaked in milk baths to keep her skin smooth and soft. Alpha and beta-hydroxy acids help to retexture the skin. They exfoliate microscopically which assists in removal of dead skin at the surface. As a result the skin feels smoother and softer. The complexion appears more even and some fine lines seem to disappear. The constant exfoliation helps control the build-up of excess oil and dirt in the pores. These acids can actually go down intercellularly and break down build up from underneath the skins surface. In a sense a controlled injury (the acid) forces the skin to renew and repair itself at an accelerated rate. This in turn creates younger looking skin. It's important to use an SPF regularly when using alpha and beta-hydroxy products. They do thin your skin and therefore make you more susceptible to the sun. A good moisturizer with a SPF 15 is recommended for everyday. Alpha and beta-hydroxy acids can be found in all preparations. From cleansers, toners, moisturizers, medications etc. Over the counter( OTC) products tend to have lower percents of active ingredients and often other less expensive ingredients that can be more irritating. Professional products available at salons have a higher percent of active ingredients and usually more soothing and nourishing ingredients as well. FAVORITE TOTAL YOU ACID PRODUCTS.
